The Room Below The Sea

h y d r o p h o n e  r e c o r d i n g s

Entering the world of undersea sounds opens possibilities for new realizations about the complexity of submarine sonic environment and its struggle to coexist with noise brutality imposed by human activities.

The Korčula island and its fragile bio-diversity is going through explicit transformation due to increased marine traffic. While expansion of tourism is good news for local economy, it is surely explicitly stressful for the invisible universe we live along with but we can barely hear. This is the sonic story of the world in vanishing. Unless...

Sonic matter on bandcamp >>

First digital release of my field recordings signed as sonic matter I dedicated to Lumbarda village from the island of Korčula in South Adriatic.

Location: Lumbarajsko poje / Lumbarda vineyards
Coordinates: 42.920830, 17.177931
Date: 07.10.2017.

The hypnotic chorus of vineyard crickets in the early autumn caught my ear one evening. Having only small handy recorder with me I decided to get to know one particular cricket, which was hanging all alone away from the bunch in the Cebalo-Popić field close by the road.
His stamina and unusual round intonation were very charming.
This is the sonic story of his life and death set in three acts.
Overall recording is 133 min long in which one can hear acoustics of the whole Lumbarda field, once an aquatory and nowadays home of the rare autohton white grapes.

All sounds used are previously recorded or played by the author, except for the sounds of Saturn rings taken from NASA Sounds (on the track no 4) and improv performance by a guest performer and long time collaborator Ivana Grahovac (piano, cello, tibetan bowls, wind chimes) on the tracks 1, 5 and 6.

Improv and field recordings belong to the 2017 archive, and are taken between Belgrade and Korčula island. Compilation is soon to be published on tape.

Stone Rain

/////////////////////// l i s t e n \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

The image is taken on Vrnik, tiny island situated close to Korčula town in South Adriatic. The island is historically known for its stone-marble used by stonemasons from the region during the early 20th century. Now the island is a hidden paradise with impressive abandoned query, magnificent marine life and a small village visited by few tourists in the summer season. Field recording is taken in July 2017, on the south side of the island, away from the settlements, facing chunk of an open sea facing the island of Mljet.

The scores are made of two images taken at Orlanduša bay, situated on the west side of Korčula island commonly called Defora, facing Lastovo. The small bay is steep and with white pebble beach at its very end. Textures of the boats laying scattered across the place picture particular perspective on the time flow, which is almost repealed in this hidden paradise. The bay has historical importance being the place where allies debarked in the final liberation of the island in the WWII.

Wisdom Of The Off Roads ~ Photo Scores

Photo scores series are texture-based compositions picturing investigation of aural semiotics which are interconnecting objects and the place, environment and the time-frame. Following the tiny road of Karagačka Street near Zuce village in the wider suburbs of Belgrade surrounded with forest just under the Avala mountain, the locale is focused on weekend-settlement divided with this tiny road from an old Yugoslav Army rocket base. The overall photo score series are a soundwalk building its dynamics through particular points - places where textures are captured.

Field recording in this context represents principal information in structuring imaginative space in which photo scores imprint various narratives unfolding numerous emotional and analytical possibilities set for intuitive interpretation. Field recording was taken on the March 19th 2017 from 6 am to 7.30 am

Concept of a soundwalk built from audio-visual content invites for synesthetic experience in creative rethinking of this particular habitat. It is a place of tranquility swarming with narratives carefully structured from details, while embracing the impression of forgotten and graciously derelict. The road itself is a small one direction car pass serving house owners, connecting this particular settlement with back side of Vrčin village. Overlapping sounds of wild and domestic fauna with the hum of near by hills and roads as well as eroded noise of distant city of Belgrade are subliminal sonic texture that evoked the idea for abstract framing of creative interrelatedness between this particular place and potential artistic experience.

The media of photo scores is evolving around intuitive approaches in interdisciplinary sound related practice dealing with the notion of active listening and its importance in development of socio-cultural perception of sound. Synesthetic correlation between aural & visual through closer proprioception of the place / photography and time / sound opens new expanse of innovation in intuitive music. The series are inspired by the concept of British composer & sound artist Jez Riley French.
